I ran into the same problem. Here is what I did:
1) Downloaded the Win2000 printer driver and status monitor from
Epson:
SC640WIN2K50AE.EXE
STATUSMON2WIN2KD2BE.EXE
2) Renamed the native Windows XP driver under Start->Printers and
Faxes so that I wouldn't confuse it with the Epson driver to be
installed.
3) Unzipped the driver and status monitor, but unchecked the WinZip
option "When Done Unzipping Run: SETUP.EXE".
4) Opened and Explorer window and changed to the Unzip directory:
C:\EPSON\SC640WIN2K50AE
5) Right-clicked on SETUP.EXE and selected Properties->Compatibility.
Set Compatibility mode to Windows 2000.
6) Doubled-clicked on SETUP.EXE and ran the install.
7) Repeated steps 3-6 for the Status Monitor.
Works fine.
